Course History & Overview
BURNLEY GOLF CLUB was founded in 1905 and was originally known as The Glen View Golf Club. The course was originally mapped out in 1905 by George Lowe the professional at Lytham St Annes. In 1908 the course was redesigned by Alec (Sandy) Herd, former British Open Champion.
In December 1929 the course was visited by James Braid, five times British Open winner and renowned golf course designer. James Braid introduced three new holes, over thirty bunkers and several new tee beds and mounds. The local paper called it extravagant!
The layout of the course still remains the same after all this time, which is a testament to James Braid, who at the time said of the course; "In time it will become a course of distinction and will need little or no constructive alteration." He also went on to say that, "The course is beautifully situated, undulating but not unduly so."
Glen View is laid out on open moorland, but the water courses and terrain give the 18 holes variety and sporting character, all of which give strong appeal to golfers of all standards.
One thing that is guaranteed at Burnley Golf Club are the enchanting, panoramic views on offer. It is set against the backdrop of the Habergham Eaves moorland and offers stunning views, which include the Ribble Valley, Pendle Hill, Gorple Moor, Ingleborough, Whernside, Pen-y-Ghent and the Lakeland hills beyond.
Playing at Glen View...
Burnley Golf Club is a James Braid designed course and is situated on the fringe of the Habergham Eaves moors, making excellent use of the rolling countryside. Glen View, as it is known locally, offers a true test of golf to golfers of every standard. The panoramic views from the course and the clubhouse are truly breath-taking, and include Pendle Hill, the Ribble Valley, Gorple Moor and the 'Three Peaks' of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent and the Lakeland hills beyond.
The course is in excellent condition and rarely closes. The greens, in particular, receive regular, positive praise. Each hole at Glen View offers its own challenges and rewards. Many rate the 5th hole as the most difficult, with out of bounds all the way down one side and a water hazard (stream) across the fairway. The four par threes all offer different challenges, from water hazards to well positioned defensive bunkers. The 11th par three hole is particularly well defended and the rhododendron bushes offer an amazing backdrop to this beautiful hole.
The 18th hole is arguable the best 'finishing hole' in East Lancashire. Standing on the 18th tee bed, with its high stroke index and the clubhouse invitingly in sight, is not the time to lose focus. There is a tempting ‘out of bounds’ to the right and a shimmering lake to the left. A true, well positioned tee shot will be duly rewarded and your second shot to the green can be admired from the clubhouse balcony, which overlooks it.
The clubhouse and its balcony offers the perfect place to enjoy a well-earned drink and delicious home-made fayre whilst you watch other fellow competitors negotiate the 18th hole or tee off on the 1st. Visitors are always assured of a warm welcome at Burnley Golf Club.
The practice facilities are comprehensive and include a purpose built golf academy with indoor swing room and covered bays. Buggies and electric trollies are available and can be booked from the well-stocked Professional’s Shop.
